5 Tips for New Insurance Agents

As a new insurance agent navigating the world of sales, customer service, agency management and the like, feeling overwhelmed is more than understandable. The reality of life is that any new career presents challenges, especially in the beginning. If you are a new agent just starting out in the insurance industry, here are five tips to jumpstart your career.

1. Dress the part

While it may seem like a no-brainer, dressing the part is essential. After all, first impressions count — especially when you are trying to gain clients’ trust. Ultimately, your outward appearance shapes society’s opinion of you, so looking professional is a must. While you don’t need to dress to the nines on a daily basis, building a professional wardrobe by investing in a few staple items of clothing and a nice pair of dress shoes can go a long way.

2. Don’t forget about customer service

In a competitive industry like insurance, every action counts — especially when it comes to customer service. While customer service typically evokes images of the food or retail industry, how you treat your clients (whether current or prospective) is important. When it comes down to it, customer service can set good insurance agents apart from great insurance agents — and a little effort in making sure you provide outstanding customer service can be what makes the difference between closing a sale and not.

3. Learn the art of persistence

Benjamin Franklin said, “Energy and persistence conquer all things.” While he may not have been talking about selling insurance, this ideology is sage advice for insurance agents old and new. Let’s face it — insurance agents can face rejection on an almost daily basis, so those who work in the field must be able to handle rejection and know how to persevere. Success doesn’t happen overnight, so if you’re struggling with rejection, stick with it.

4. Remember the power of planning

No matter how much of a natural salesperson you are, don’t underestimate the power of a solid plan. Before you talk to prospective clients, meet with current clients, or handle any other part of a sale, take time to plan what you are going to say. Carving out a block of time can help you deliver your message in a more concise and effective way and ultimately, create a better experience for you and your client.

5. Market yourself

Thanks to the power of social media, marketing yourself is more important than ever.
